The Wharf

During the great age of sail, the wharves of a seacoast community such as Nantucket constituted the center of town. This was particularly true of Nantucket as it was a thriving fishing and whaling port during the 18th and 19th centuries. Much of the commerce of the village would be founded along these wharves as villagers would purchase all their necessities of life. In centuries past, these wharves were bustling with activity, bespeaking volumes of their community's proud seafaring way of life.
