English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold's first view of Nantucket in 1602 was of the cliffs of Sankaty Head.  Sankaty, which the Native Indians called Naphehecoy, sits 92-feet above the Atlantic at the southeast corner of the island upon cliffs which reveal glacial formations.  The red and white Sankaty Head lighthouse rises another 70-feet above the cliffs.  For 150 years she has cast her beam to nocturnal mariners, warning of the treacherous shoals offshore.
