Surfside
Today as in the
past, Surfside, once known as Weeweeder, is a favorite beach for
sunbathing and fishing. The railroad first came to this
village in 1881, bringing with it tourists to stay at the
Surfside Hotel - a former Rhode Island hotel shopped across the
water to the island in pieces. In the 1880's, during what
was known as the "Surfside boom," brothers Charles and
Henry Coffin developed the village and in the process sold over
400 properties on the island. |
