Sconset
Eighteenth-century
fishermen erected huts along the coast of Sconset for their
hauls of cod and halibut. Existing for hundreds of years
as a fishing village, Sciasconset (known locally as Sconset) was
"rediscovered" in the 1880's with the new railway from
the town of Nantucket. It became the summer favorite of
vaudeville and stage stars and was often referred to as
"the Newport of the Nantucketoise." |
