Miacomet
Used primarily
for grazing sheep, the area of Nantucket known as Miacomet
(Native for "they gather together") was also active in
the whaling business beginning in the late 17th century.
At the head of Miacomet Pond, the praying Indians of the area
had their meeting place. In the early 20th century a New
Bedford Tea Merchant attempted to develop 80 acres of Miacomet
into 2,300 lots. As an incentive, he offered a pound of
tea with every lot sold. |
