Hummock
Some of the
earliest settlers of Nantucket lived around Hummock Pond to take
advantage of the abundant fresh water. The island's
largest pond, it was named for Indian sachem Nanahumacke whose
people lived at its neck. Originally a salt water inlet,
this pond in the island's south central plains and shaped like a
fish hook, was landlocked by sand pushed in by the ocean waves
and eventually relinquished its salinity. |
