Great
Point
Great
Point, at the end of a long, sandy strip and shaped like a
giant crab's claw, juts into Nantucket Sound at the northeast
corner of the island. The Native Indians called the
point Nauma, possibly meaning "fishing place" as
Great Point Rip provided great fishing. Also known as
Sandy Point, the landmark lighthouse was originally built
in 1818 and was rebuilt in 1984 after a fierce storm.
